Y-Browser 0.80 by PushL

I’m sure that there are few readers of this blog who don’t already know about Y-Browser but I wanted to make sure everyone knew about the latest release version - 0.80.

Version 0.77 brought add-on support along with three add-ons: Zip, Text Viewer, and Mail folder support. Now version 0.80 has tweaked the appearance of Y-Browser and added some great new features. Upon upgrading, the first thing you’ll notice is that the app finally has an SVG icon. Granted it’s nothing breathtaking, but I’m happy to be rid of the pixilated icon in versions past…

While on the subject of icons, Y-Browser version 0.80 is the version file manager to support the ability to change the internal display icon set. A new ‘Extra icons’ add-on provides users with four new SVG icon sets to choose from on top of the old bitmap set.

Beyond that, the app now calls to external icons for certain known file types that display as you browse. The image below shows the folder and document icons from the internal ‘Tango’ icon set along with the external SIS icon and the DOC/TXT and XLS icons from Office Suite 3.

Another new feature in this build is the ability to toggle portrait and landscape display modes with the ‘Switch layout’ option. Don’t get too excited though, as your display will be returned to the default perspective when you exit the app.

Y-Browser allows for fast and easy file transfers. With one or multiple files selected, simply choose File -> Send and Y-Browser gives you the option to send the file(s) via MMS, email, Bluetooth, infrared, or web upload.

Another one of my favorite features of this app is the shortcuts. Y-Browser allows you to assign a wide variety of operations to your keypad keys 0-9 for the fastest possible access to most of the app’s functions.

Just when all of the buzz is focused on FExplorer and X-plore, PushL’s new build reminds us why Y-Browser is certainly the best available file management option for s60 3rd devices. Of course FExplorer and X-plore are still in beta so who knows what future releases will bring…

PushL, what theme are you using I like. Also nice review, I wasn’t even going to bother upgrading but I think you have sufficiently convinced me :)

    No worries Kappy :)

I agree that it’s definitely worth the upgrade. The new features are great! The one thing I’ll note is that you should restart the app each time you switch icons and the new set will be displayed.

As for the theme, thanks a lot. It is the ‘Alternatate’ version theme in the Black & Blue 2-pack.

zach, I think the link to the theme pack is broken (at least it’s not working for me here, i.e. it doesn’t even appear to be a live link).

    hey there
two thumbs up for a well designed colourful n informative site, thank you for makin such a thing.
im using the new y browser its user interface is fantastic however im havin a problem:
ive reset my phone but previously i copied my meesages to the pc then cut and paeted them to the drafts part of the messages on my phone(it cant be pasted to the inbox using the pc)so i have used the mail part of the y browser n it says thers no data in the draft part however they r already there,i think this programme is missing the function of copying, cutting n pasting from the mail part using the ybrowser.to b sure of that ive saved those msgs to a folsder in the memory card n tried copying them from there to paste them into the inbox/outbox but u guessed it it didnt work.if it matters im using a E61 with the latest firmware.
keep up the goodwork here n in mobile9.
    cheers

Hey dr. moe, thanks for the kind words. :)

As for copying and pasting your messages back into your inbox, I don’t think that the method you’re using will work. The only way that I know of to do it is by using the backup functionality within PC Suite. I admittedly have not tried the method that you’re using but I think the security limitations within S60 3rd may prevent it from working.

can this software view files in games folder for nokia 6110 navigator? I can see 2 default games by using my phone but unable to see them using Nokia suite phone browser. Thanks.

Y-Browser will give you access to more files and folders that the integrated FM but you still won’t have access to protected directories/files as Symbian restricts access.

Btw - download link has been updated. :)

Hi hi. Y-Browser won’t install on my Nokia e65. Complains abt certificate. Any help would be great.

  15. zach August 14th, 2007 8:17 am

Hi cbc - Make sure you’re installing the latest version from http://www.drjukka.com and that your settings in app manager are “all” and “off”. That should take care of any issues.

    i want y-browser for my mobile N70

  17. zach September 18th, 2007 10:21 am

Thanks for the comment arun. :) Right now Y-Browser is only compatible with S60 3rd and I don’t believe Jukka has any plans to develop an S60 2nd version. You can always contact him though and ask!

  18. chris October 10th, 2007 3:33 pm

What’s with the icons i like them, where can we find them?

  19. zach October 10th, 2007 3:56 pm

Hey Chris, I’m not exactly sure why but it looks like Jukka has removed them from his site. I’ll try to have a look later but if you search google I bet you’ll find them. I’ll post if I do…

  20. Johnny_boy October 24th, 2007 7:06 pm

how do I use the plugins? I installed the zip plugin, but I don’t see it in my Installation folder, or in the DrJukka.com folder that get’s created after installing Y-Browser.

  21. zach October 24th, 2007 8:35 pm

That plugin will add zip compatibility to the main app. It’s been a while but browse to a zip file and check the menus for a pleasant surprise. :)

  24. joe barzini December 1st, 2007 9:08 pm

The only problem with this software is that you cannot send directly from the mail folder… however it is still good software :)

  25. John December 17th, 2007 3:41 am

As much as I like Y-Broswer, can someone point me to the “new ‘Extra icons’ add-on provides users with four new SVG icon sets to choose from on top of the old bitmap set” is located? I don’t mind the new Drive Icons but the bright yellow folder icons are driving me batty! :)

Options -> Settings -> Icons leads me to a blank dialog that says “Select icon file… (No Data).

Also, one nigglie, why does the DrJukka folder install in the “Menu” area of my E62 instead of the “Intsallations” folder like every other Symbian app?

Thanks in advance for any information and thank you to DrJukka for all his efforts with this app.

    thank u!

  27. Dr.Jukka March 22nd, 2008 11:01 am

They were a bit disabled with some versions, anyway, with 0.88 extra icons are back and working a lot better than they used to work
