Does Anyone Check the Wishlist?

Every once in a while I stop by the s60.com application wishlist to see what people are asking for. My question is who uses this list? Beyond that, who moderates and maintains it? The concept is great but is it useful and effective in practice?

There are tons of wishes on the list that ask for functionality that already exists (thanks to one or even several apps) but there are very few ‘linked applications’ - aka responses directing the post author to an app that meets their needs. I responded to about 10 wishes but then I figured, why bother? Will the post author even know that I responded?

I remember quite some time ago I added a post to the wishlist but to be honest, I didn’t remember what my wish was and I just saw that three people responded! Granted, none of them posted an app that actually does what I asked for, but it would have been nice to have been notified that there were responses. As a side note, FP2 will include the functionality that I asked for. I don’t know if my wish had anything to do with it but if it did it would be cool if someone emailed me and said, “Thanks for the wish Zach, we’ll be adding this functionality in FP2!”

I think it’s safe to say that we’re all big fans of s60.com and the effort that Nokia puts into connecting with their customers, but in my eyes the wishlist is weak at best.

  • There should be an RSS feed for the wishlist. Right now (as far as I can tell) developers have no way of subscribing to the wishlist to see what customers are looking for. If in-house development plans to address the wish themselves, maybe it can be hidden and the post author can be notified. For all other wishes, why not give Symbian developers a useful tool that they can use to see what S60 users are looking for?
  • Is there a notification sent to the post author when someone responds to a wish?
  • Someone needs to maintain this list. We know that everyone involved with s60.com is quite busy, but when people post wishes for apps that exist why not reply?

Again, I think the wishlist is an awesome idea that can really be a useful tool for Nokia, third-party developers, and consumers. As it stands now however, I’m not sure what use it has…

Hi Zach! Thanks for mentioning the Wish List, let me see if I can answer some of your questions..

My question is who uses this list?

Gobs of visitors each day are using it, we're getting loads of submissions to it daily. It's being utilized alot more than I ever initially thought it would.

    who moderates and maintains it?

Our S60 online marketing team - Me, Tiia, Saara, and Juha. I think Juha mostly, although he's taken some time off to prepare for his exams, but he's back now.

There should be an RSS feed for the wishlist.

    Yup, absolutely. It's coming.

Is there a notification sent to the post author when someone responds to a wish?

Not sure, but that's an excellent idea!!

Someone needs to maintain this list. We know that everyone involved with s60.com is quite busy, but when people post wishes for apps that exist why not reply?

We ARE busy!! :-) Really busy actually. I think it's tough for us to know every app available, that's why we rely on the S60 community to participate, which they have!

We've learned alot from phase 1 of the Application Wish, and we're already busy working on improving it. You raised some excellent points in your post and I know we're addressing each one of them and more!

But hey, great post, thanks for that feedback! Keep it coming!!

    @Phil

Thanks for the very fast and detailed response! The points that you made and the info you provided are good indicators that you guys surely take the wishlist seriously and you're working hard to build off of the foundation that you've created. A question: What is the goal of the wishlist? Is it to give Nokia an insight into the needs/wants of the consumer? Is it to give Nokia AND third party developers an insight into the needs/wants of the consumer?

In either case, I think that there are many ways to make the list more beneficial to those intended to benefit from it.

For example, why not allow registered s60.com members to comment on wishes? I've seen several posts and thought, "Wow that's a great idea but it would be even better if..." This might help Nokia and/or other developers by letting consumers build on what started as an "okay" idea and possibly turn it into a "great" idea. It would also let other members 'support' an idea. There is a rating function that might help you guys internally, but other don't know if the wish that has a rating of 9.5 got three votes or 300 votes.

Thanks again for your response! I can't wait to see the next phase of the wishlist come to fruition. Of course everyone knows that I love apps and the concept of the s60.com wishlist really has the potential to provide excellent building blocks for developers!

    :)

By the way, I hope Juha did well on his exams!

I'm not sure what the official business case of the wishlist is. But I reckon it's what you've suggested - Users can find 3rd party apps easier and give ideas for undeveloped apps. Developers can get ideas of what to develop. S60 platform developers can get ideas as well.

For example, why not allow registered s60.com members to comment on wishes?

Yes, excellent idea! I'm guessing that's in the plans.

I know for sure that that's changing to a Digg-style thumbs up/down system.

    And thanks for your feedback!!!!

I do sometimes check the wishlist, both to see whether there's something in there that would be worth developing, and also I have posted a response to at least one other wish that we could fulfil.

Zach, the writer of Symbian in Motion, asks Does Anyone Check the Wishlist? Phil already replied to most of Zach’s questions, but he missed the big and hairy one: does Nokia systematically process the wishes? Or at least the……

Yup, I know it's checked multiple times per week, maybe every weekday.

Thanks again for your responses Phil. It's good to know how seriously you guys do in fact take the wishlist and that it looks like some good thought, time and effort is going into the next phase! I know if I was a developer, the wishlist could really become something that I devote A LOT of interest to... :)
