Symbian in Motion

Auto Profiles by Symbian Guru

While Best Profiles still having issues with FP1 devices, I was in a curious situation when my N95 arrived a few weeks ago. I rely heavily on automatic profile switching so I had to find a solution and fast! There are a few other options out there but I have to say that I’m very happy with the one I chose. As the title suggests, that option was Auto Profiles by Symbian Guru.

Auto Profiles is a remarkably simple and attractive solution that has yet to fail me on either FP1 device that I use it on. It doesn’t pack all of the punch that Best Profiles does, but it’s 100 times easier to set up and to be perfectly honest I don’t find myself using any of the ‘bells and whistles’ these days. The settings are kept nice and simple thus allowing you to create the desired profile schedule as quickly and easily as possible.

The main screen gives you three choices - Activate/deactivate, Schedule and Calendar. Schedule of course is where you’ll configure the profile schedule that will determine when profiles are switched. As seen below, there are only a few settings to worry about and you’re done.

Defining “workdays” within the app’s Settings menu further simplifies your schedule. Truth be told, I had my schedule fully configured in about one minute and I enjoy not having to worry about anything while Auto Profiles continues to do its job.

The third and final section within Auto Profiles is a simple screen that allows you to configure your Calendar settings. Here you can configure the app to automatically enable a specific profile during meetings defined in your S60 calendar.

Symbian Guru affords you a 10-day trial period to be absolutely certain that Auto Profiles is the solution for you. If you enjoy a useful straight-forward app that does exactly what you need it to do without any user intervention or worry, then this is the app for you.

This time you went before me, Zach. I have been searching for a great profiles application for quite a while now, tried all of them (there are 4 i think: bestprofiles, autoprofiles, handyprofiles and smartprofiles). Each has its good and its bad.

But after I while, I decided it was going to be between the simplicity of autoprofiles or the usability of handyprofiles. I finally fell for the 2nd because of one little flaw: auto profiles doesn't allow activation of profiles overnight (i already made this same comment on ricky's blog when he posted his review). You cannot set a profile (like silent) to activate between 10pm and 7am, it always tells you the deactivate time is before the activate time. Quite stupid if you ask me.

plus handy profiles is much more integrated: you can create new profiles and customize ur profiles through it, without switching to Nokia's original profiles application.

give it a go, zach, it's not bells and whistles (unless u use its location based profile changes, which i don't), it's simple and efficient :D i know you'll like it.

Thanks for the comment Rita! :)

Definitely check out the latest version of Auto Profiles (2.00). My guess is that you might have tested an older version because I have a bunch of profile change scheduled between those times with no problem. Or maybe it was the device you were using?

I'll still check out the Handy app but this one is working so well for me and takes up such a tiny amount of RAM that I'll likely just stick with it.

Welcome from Belfast and thanks for your comment Darren! :)

The theme pictured above is called Reflect by Psiloc - definitely one of my all-time favs!

Not convince by this one... Far too basic I think. One feature I really like in BestProfiles is all "one time timed activation" menu. I mean you can activate at a certain time, or activate now for a certain amount of time. I looked at Epocware's Handy Profiles and you can only activate now for a certain time, and that's essentially what's keeping me from switching from BestProfiles.

But I reckon HandyProfiles is better integrated into the phone than BestProfiles seems to... Oh well, I will just give it another try and perphaps switch this time...
If only there was an in HandyProfile option to turn it off too...

Thanks for the comment merlin :)

It's definitely a matter of preference and I love that there are a bunch of apps to choose from. For me, I wasn't using any of the added functionality of Best Profiles anymore so this is right up my alley - VERY simple to setup and works with no issues. I'll still check out Handy Profiles at some point but all I need is schedule-based changing and calendar-based changing so Auto Profiles is perfect.

I understand and respect your choice, as always. In fact I'm glad you're here to give impressions of apps you try. You made me actually re-think about my choice of using BestProfiles (that one I bought after reading a review here ;-)).
I'm now using Handy Profiles, it feels less "overkill", and I can cope with the few features I left behind in the transition.
You're on AutoProfiles and that's okay; the more choice, the better...and I'm not even thinking about the "the more choice, the more SiMo reviews" cause to effect relation :-D

Long life to SiMo, keep it up Zach !

:) Thanks merlin - I'm definitely going to have to
check out Handy Profiles! I'm glad that you found an
app you're enjoying though; S60 is all about
    versatility and options!
