More N95 Accelerometer Love: Y-Inclinometer by Jukka
The fun begins! It looks like everyone is getting excited about the recent news surge brought about by Samir, developer of rotateMe. Yes, the N95 packs an accelerometer - a small chip that can provide device orientation readings to apps. Out of the box, the only app on the device that appears to make use of the accelerometer is the camera. Basically the camera uses the accelerometer to determine the device orientation at the time a picture is taken. This allows the N95 to auto-rotate the image so that it is upright in the gallery.
Mark Guim showed us a video last week of the recently uncovered ball demo that helps show us the accuracy of the accelerometer - in three dimensions. Now it looks like one of our favorite freeware developers has created his own little app that displays another use for the accelerometer.

Y-Inclinometer by Dr. Jukka is a simple app that displays vehicle angle while off-roading. Operation is simple; fix your phone in a secure cradle and adjust it so that it is perfectly upright in your vehicle. Then launch the app!
Jukka wants to make sure that N95 owners don’t get too crazy and flip their vehicles while enjoying some off-road fun and this app can be a nice tool. Please don’t do anything stupid like seeing how far you can go to test Y-Inclinometer’s readings - Enjoy this great creative app safely!
By the way, I should note that the graphics and icon for this app were made by the one and only p@sco. :)

But it would be great if we could see how accurate this accelerometer really is.

Zach, not sure if you have it installed or not yet, or anyone else care to share this information?

I've played with it a bit on my phone and it definitely updates pretty rapidly. Check out the video on Mark's site of the ball demo - it's about the same in terms of resposiveness.

@deejaysonic You mean your N95 didn't come with the anti-grav sensor??? ;)

I just now wonder if developers are going to start making use of this feature in a meaningful way. Sure we see RotateMe kicking things off, and in a VERY useful way. I just wonder how many other apps can benefit from this feature w/o the developers going way out of their way to include it (not saying its hard to include, but rather to find a good use for it, and then limiting that function to the N95 only.)
I am getting a N95-8GB for Christmas, that is if I was a good boy this year. I would like to see it included in some more things, perhaps we as a community need to reach out to the developers with ideas we would find useful and present them to them as feature requests. One idea that comes to mind off hand is, admitidly stolen, to have one of the many multi-alarm programs to incorporate the "flip to silence an alarm" feature which many of us saw on the S60 TouchUI marketing video.
Perhaps I'll start a thread on HoFo and see if some of the fellas there can come up anything good, meanwhile suggestions here would be encouraged as well (at least by myself).

Also, we had a nice quick discussion over on this post on The Nokia Blog that you may want to take a look at.

Hell i'll try it for a laugh in my 4WD. It would be real good if you could zero it for say non level dash mounts. In my desk cradle it reads -4 roll and 22 pitch so it would be real good if i could tell the phone that was the new zero.
Other use is a clinometer for slope and angle on building sites.
