Symbian in Motion

SignME! by Barak Harel

If there is a process related to S60 3rd devices that needs simplifying, it is the signing process. I’ve discussed many of the problems that I have with Symbian Signed here on SiMo in the past so I won’t do it again. Besides, I’m currently caught in an email loop that has Symbian Signed sending me five or six irrelevant emails each day so who knows what might happen if I complain about the process anymore…

Because signing apps yourself is a necessary evil for the time being, various independent developers have created signing utilities with the hope that users may have an easier time with the process. SignME! is the best utility I’ve seen thus far and it makes makes everything MUCH easier. Of course you still have to obtain a cert and key from Symbian Signed but once you do the trouble ends there.

Simply right-click on any unsigned SIS/SISX file and you will see a SignME! option in the drop down menu. You guessed it! SignME! will then sign the file and add the signed version to the same directory. It will also ask if you would like to delete the unsigned file.

The first time you run SignME! it will automatically ask for a cert file, key file and the password. That data will then be saved and you’re in one-click signing heaven until your cert file expires. Yes developer certs expire after six months but no worries - you can access the settings from your Programs list and import new files once you create them.

SignME! is an early beta but it runs very well for me. Really my only suggestion for the author is to add an option to save and manage multiple cert/key files for those of us with more than one device. Other than that, I’m loving it! Terrific work Barak! :)
