Flip Silent Updated to Version 1.01

Ahhhh, the accelerometer. I wonder if Samir hadn’t announced his rotateMe 2.0 intentions back in October, would we be seeing all of this accelerometer love? No matter, as I’m sure you’ve read by now Tong Ren of the SymbianBlog has beaten Samir to the punch. Samir is currently working on ShutUp, an app that will silence incoming calls or alarms by simply flipping your device over onto its display. Ren however, has already released the second version of his Flip Silent app which is currently available as unsigned freeware and will accomplish the same thing.

Flip Silent is a very simple but useful app that has the “wow-factor” we’ve been waiting for. In reality of course, it’s by no means a necessity - how hard is it to push a button? This app is about showcasing accelerometer functionality and making your friends jealous. Operation is quite simple: The app can be configured to automatically mute the ringer or hang up an incoming call when the phone is rotated face-down. Muting of course, is accomplished by simply switching to the Silent profile. This means that as long as your phone remains face-down, incoming calls will no longer ring.

The part I enjoy is that you can configure any profile to become active once the phone is rotated face-up again. Flip Silent can leave your phone in Silent mode, automatically restore your previous profile or switch to any other profile. The app also autostarts (in the background or foreground) so you can enjoy its functionality without having to remember to enable it each time you power up your device. Here’s a video from Ren of the app in action:

On a side note, did you notice that the poor guy’s N95 is being held together by a piece of masking tape! Flip Silent is freeware but you might consider donating. His blog states that donations will go towards the PIA Symbian Signing process but maybe if he raises some extra cash he can get himself a new phone, or at least a new case… ;)

The app is listed as being compatible with the N95, N82 and N93 and you’ll need the accelerometer plugin for use with the N95 if you haven’t installed it already. As the app is currently unsigned, you’ll also need to get a developer certificate from Symbian Signed and sign it yourself before installing it on any device.
