New Graduate from Beta Labs

Share Online 3.0In an announcement today by Tommi from Nokia Beta Labs, Share Online 3.0 has graduated from Beta school to a full fledged application. I want to congratulate the Nokia Beta Labs guys on creating this application. Personally it’s one of my daily applications I use regularly to upload and view my pictures on Flickr.

Share Online 3.0 allows users to keep up to date with their Flickr and Vox accounts on the go. Sharing your pictures on Flickr and having the ability to blog directly to Vox are great features which has kept this application going and eventually allowed it to be a success. With the latest release it also now supports Ovi, Nokia’s new sharing service which let’s you upload and share pictures, videos and music using your handset. The new version also integrates a new addition to your active desktop screen displaying any new activity on your Flickr, Vox and Ovi accounts respectively (see screenshot below).

Do note that Ovi is only supported in the following countries:

Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, Columbia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Estonia, Germany, Great Britain, Greece, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Laos, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nicaragua, Norway, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Singapore, Slovenia, South-Africa, Spain, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Ukraine, U.S.A., Venezuela, Vietnam.

You can download the new application and find more information on the Nokia Sharing and Blogging site.

Handy Weather Updated to Version 5.01

Handy Weather by Epocware is probably one of the apps that I use most often on my S60 devices, and yet I haven’t ever reviewed it here on SiMo. Odd perhaps, but I suppose my assumption was simply that everyone already knew about it since Epocware advertises the app very well on sites like S60.com and Handango. In any event, there’s really only one thing you need to know. If you want weather data on your S60 device, you want Handy Weather.

As with most Epocware apps, the UI and performance are top-notch with Handy Weather. It’s easy to set up, easy to use, it updates automatically in the background at defined intervals and it packs a terrific feature set. In the latest version 5.01, Epocware has added three new views that give a wider scope than had previously been available.

  • Temperature map - Displays a weather chart of the selected zone shown by shades of blue, yellow and green
  • Pressure map - Displays pressure space and depression area
  • Satellite map - Displays satellite imagery of various parts of the world

I haven’t installed the update yet myself, but I hope they’ve also fixed the bug that prevented the weather screen saver from displaying temperatures in Fahrenheit. Here’s a great video walk through including all of the newest features:

If you’ve already purchased Handy Weather, definitely click through and download the update. If you’re not already a Handy Weather user, enjoy the generous 14-day free trial.

Nokia Text Messenger Beta

A quick little release from the guys at the Nokia Beta Labs, our resident S60 innovators; Nokia Text Messenger Beta. A nifty little application which displays your SMS messages from your device on your desktop via a little widget. The application is only compatible with Window Vista users and requires Nokia PC Suite 6.85 or later.

Handy installation instructions if needed:

1) When the installation is complete, right-click the Windows Sidebar area. Then, select Add Gadgets from the menu that appears, and a window with all the available gadget applications opens.

2) Double-click Nokia Text Messenger to add the gadget to Windows Sidebar.

I won’t touch it as I won’t be touching Vista with a 10 foot pole, but if you are running on Vista give it a go and leave us some feedback.

One Coming Soon on N-Gage v2

The official website is up and the news is it’s going to be released very soon! The game in question is simply titled One, a 3D beat-em up for the new N-Gage 2 platform. Looking at the trailer and screen shots it looks awesome. The graphics are the best so far for the N-Gage!

The main aim of One will be to become just that “The One” (ala the Jet Li Movie). You will fight against other fighters competing against you, bosses and your usual beat-em up concepts apply here. But the stunning features for one will be smoothness of how the game plays and the graphics and fluidity of the movements of the characters.

Check out the Official websites for more information and release details, and an Exclusive Video of it being played on the N81 courtesy of Nokia Creative.

Smart Settings for S60 3rd is Almost Here!

That’s right people; the app that everyone knows and loves should be released for S60 3rd devices by the end of February! Smart Settings by Mobifun Software was hugely popular for older S60 variants and I expect that it will see similar success with 9.x.

For newcomers to S60 or those who somehow have never heard of this great app, it essentially provides two main functions. The first is a quick app launcher added to your home screen. One of your softkeys becomes a launcher (you can add custom text to display on the softkey) that will display a list of up to nine apps / games / etc. Each app in the list also has a corresponding speed key (1 - 9) assigned to it. So to launch an app, you simply hit your softkey followed by the appropriate speed key number and you’re done. You can also of course scroll through the list if you desire. The other main functions bring added control and customization to lock, unlock and security settings.

There are a few apps on the market that offer similar functionality but no app does it quite like Smart Settings, and no app combines the same features into one neat package. Smart Settings is currently in private beta but Mobifun believes it will be ready for prime time within the next few weeks. Woo hoo!
