MyStrands Social Player 3.1 Released; Scrobbling, new Player UI and more!

I’ve been waiting for a loooooong time for this update and I couldn’t be happier to let you all know that it’s finally here! My favorite music player / recommendation service Social Player has just received a major revision and trust me when I tell you, you can’t get it installed soon enough. Check out Gabriel’s post on the Strands Blog for more details, but here are my highlights:

  • Native S60 app and Java app (S40-optimized) released!
  • New Player UI - vastly improved interface, better controls
  • Scrobbling support! Send track data to Last.fm as you listen

The post on the Strands Blog includes links to download both the native S60 app as well as the Java app. Now there’s really no reason why you can’t enjoy the complete interactive experience that Social Player provides on any device. Kudos to Strands!

Theme Master Taieb Has a Site!

How I forgot to tell everyone about this earlier I have no idea, but one of my favorite themers has recently launched his own website!

That’s right people… Taieb! I’ve featured his themes quite often here on SiMo and I’ve asked him about putting up a site for quite a while. Well it looks like he finally got some help and his site is looking great. You’ll find a big archive of nearly all the S60 3rd work he’s done to date. There are also RSS feeds that you can subscribe to so that you’re notified as soon as a new Taieb theme hits the net (though images don’t seem to be working yet).

So a belated congratulations to the very talented Taieb. Now head on over to his site and have fun exploring…

Bye Bye N95 8GB NAM

Ok, ok… I’m not really getting rid of my new N95 8GB NAM. I am sending it back to Dell though. Why? My new handset has a problem where the ear speaker clips (crackles) when the volume gets to a certain level. Unfortunately it’s not a very high level, in fact it even clips constantly with the volume set to 50% - 60%. Definitely unacceptable.

But that’s not the real reason I’m posting this. I’ve had limited interactions with Dell in the past but ever since I first heard the news that Dell would be outsourcing its customer service to India, I’ve heard / read a lot of people complain about poor customer service. Well I’m not sure where the person I spoke to last night was located, but I literally could not be happier with my experience. The customer care rep was polite and helpful, and the policies that applied to my problem were nothing short of perfect.

My call to Dell customer service lasted about 10 minutes. When all was said and done, the rep had initiated the shipment of a new N95 8GB to my house. The package will include a return shipping label and instructions on how to send my defective handset back. If I so choose, I can even have UPS pick my return package up from my house at Dell’s expense. I had email confirmations regarding all arrangements in my inbox this morning, done and done.

A+ Dell - fantastic job. I would certainly not hesitate to give them my business again. In fact, I’m positive that I’ll be giving them my business again. I’ll recommend them as well: The N95 8GB NAM is down to $580 shipped on the Dell Small Business site. No coupon needed; best price I’ve seen. Also, the red N95 NAM (N95-3) is $522.21 shipped which isn’t bad at all.

Psiloc What? Pre-launch Competition

Kudos to Psiloc for coming up with a fun and unique way to celebrate the upcoming release of a brand new S60 app! Psiloc What? is a fun way to compete for a free license code for an upcoming application that will be released in the next few weeks. You can read about it on the Psiloc blog, but I’ll give you the nuts and bolts here:

Head to the Psiloc What? site, download and install the free app. Every day you open the app and update its status, you will see a new clue as to what exciting new S60 software Psiloc will be releasing soon. Any time you’re ready, take a guess as to what the new app will be. Then at the end of the content Psiloc will pick 12 of their favorite entries (the best/funniest/most interesting guesses) and those 12 people will get free license codes. It’s that easy.

If you don’t end up winning a free code, don’t cry just yet. Maybe I can convince Psiloc to hand over a few free codes for SiMo readers once their new app is released. ;)
