Psiloc Connect: The App We’ve All Been Waiting For

If I had a dollar for every time I begged and pleaded for this functionality in S60, well, I could have paid Psiloc to make this app a long time ago…
Psiloc Connect is an app that needs little introduction. Suffice it to say, you need this app. In my opinion, Access Points (AP) are handled very, very poorly by S60. Each app that makes use of a data connection must have its own default AP defined. This is just silly. As done on other OSes, the device should worry about connecting via the fastest available AP and apps should just call to which ever AP is currently active. Period.
Thanks to Psiloc, your S60 3rd handset can now use data as nature intended - intelligently. Psiloc Connect is a utility that you’ll install, configure and then never look at again. Huh? It’s not because you won’t like it, but rather because once configured it will constantly be doing its job with no user intervention whatsoever. In a nutshell, this app will add a new AP to your device called “Psiloc Connect”. Any app using this AP will first attempt to connect to the internet via available WLAN networks. If no WLAN is available, the new AP will automatically drop back to 3G / EDGE / GPRS. Done!

Do you live in a country where data is expensive? No worries, Psiloc Connect is still an app you need. You can configure it to connect via WLAN - and it will look for ALL of your WLAN networks as opposed to just one - and if no WLAN network is available, the app will not connect. No surprise astronomical bills, no worries.

As for battery life, of course using WiFi will affect your time between charges. The app itself is incredibly light-weight though. The Connect daemon only eats up 42KB in fact.
My advice? Head over to the Psiloc Shop and download this app ASAP. Again, this is how S60 should work. That’s the beauty of S60 though, isn’t it? There are so many phenomenal developers like Psiloc who take the bull by the horns, listen to end-users and crank out awesome apps that pick up where S60 left off. Psiloc offers a free trial as with all of its apps but believe me, once you have a taste there’s no way you’ll be able to go a minute without this app.

awesome application zach i hope it works like it should. i’m installing it right now.
well, ok I suppose, but what Devicescape (sort of does) for free? Can’t bring myself to pay for it..
I’ve not played with Devicescape but from what I understand the two apps aren’t similar at all. From what I recall, Devicescape continuously scans for recognized WLANs and logs in automatically.
Psiloc Connect on the other hand, becomes an AP accessible to all apps on your handset. It connects via the fastest available means at the point in time that an app calls for data, and then disconnects when it is no longer needed.
Sadly it doesn’t appear to work with SIP VOIP, I can’t connect to Sipgate using it as an access point.
Also I wish Psiloc would find another method of protecting their software, there DRM solution is well known for causing issues, such as extended device boot up time. On my E51 it also causes a Kern-3 error everytime I reboot.
Future devices from Nokia should have something like this as standard, early E-Series device, such as E50, E60 did as I remember, why it was never added to N and more recent E series devices I don’t know.
Devicescape is very similar but does not have any cellular data fallback, which is critical, because then all it does it fold up multiple Wi-Fi access points into one.
That being said, Devicescape’s best feature is automated hotspot logins, so you don’t need to waste time inputting user/pass into a web form when trying to get a page in line at Starbucks, let’s say. Psiloc does not appear to support this.
Zack, just a question, Psiloc Connect connects only to predefined WiFi networks or to any wireless network in range? For instance, I am in a new place (airport or whatever), there is a WLAN available but is not one of my access points since is my first time at this place, so, Connect will offer this new WLAN or will go for the 3G connection?
It would be nice to include a capability like JoikuSpot has via bluetooth. There are still lots of devices/computers out there that doesn’t have WiFi.
@Juan - I would have to kill the security on my WLANs to know for sure, but I can tell you that security-enabled WLANs will not be picked up by Psiloc Connect unless they are defined APs. It might pick up open WLANs that aren’t APs (I doubt it) but I don’t have time to test right now. Anyone else tested this?
can i download AGPS data via a WLAN network with this?
hey, what’s the name of the theme used in the test? I need it :) THANX!
Interesting, but this software will never be installed on my device. Why?
Because ‘ratkat’ is absolutely right! Psiloc does make some nice software, but their DRM copy protection is running 24/7 and this is a BAD thing. Slowing down the boot time, using cpu resources constantly and crashing the phone, from time to time. They really need to rethink this or it will kill them.
I have paid for two pieces of soft from Psiloc before I found out that it was their DRM that thrashed my device, so I never ever used this paid for software.
Besides destroying the devices the DRM is installed on, it isn’t very effective. Cracks can be found everywhere, so it’s not like it’s more effective that what the other software companies are doing, it just destroys their product.
Come on, Psiloc, wake up!
doesn’t handy wi do this too?
AGPS only works with connections through the cellular mobile phone network.
Anyone else tried this with Mail for Exchange? As far as i know this does not work. The Nokia E61 has a similiar function built in, you can form a connection point group with several connection points - however, these groups also do not work with Mail for Exchange.
There’s an issue with the E61 / E61i that they’re currently working on. New version should be available soon.
a badly needed app for s60. will try it out on my e61i as believe it is now compatible. beleive this software was origianlly called “freeway..” BTW- I have been using a SE P1i recently and this feature is built into UIQ3. I am beginning to think UIQ3 is much more advanced than S60…..it is certainly faster and I am not a fan of touch screens for the record.
I too think that UIQ3 is a much more balanced OS than S60. All the basics are covered (no shitty built in alarm clock, Timer & Stopwatch are built in, better filemanager, better task manager…), but UIQ seems to fell short on installable application library… Plus the UIQ3 phones are really crap ergonomy-wise (compared to S60 phones or even UIQ2 phones)…
I am not using Connect for the moment, I’m waiting the annoucement of E71 and if dissappointed I will fall back to E51 to replace my E50…
By the way, what is that thing about E50 handling DRM better than newer phones ?? Can someone give some explanations, details ?
Christian, I know AGPS works only through a mobile data connection, but since Psiloc Connect bundles all WLAN and 3G/EDGE/GPRS connections together into a single access point, doesn’t that mean that AGPS can be utilized by selecting this Psiloc Connect-made access point that connects to a WLAN network?
Works fine on my N95 8G (firmware V20.0.016)
Works a treat with M4E. Phone was in a 3G only area all day yesterday and my email continued to arrive. At work or home email comes in on WIFI.
Before Connect i used Devicescape as my AP with all my WIFI hotspots on my Devicescape account. I had no other WIFI access points on my phone. After installing connect i found it treats Devisescape as an AP and if you are in one of your hotspot areas it connects via WIFI. To check this i scanned for WIFI at home and had to input my home WEP key before i could connect.
In short keep devicescape enabled and use Connect as you access point and you should have the perfect connection, i.e all your WIFI hotspots and 3G when it’s needed.
HOW COOL??????????????
chilys
ok
Hi, anyone experienced “Closed application: Main
KERN-EXEC 3″ after installing Connect? My phone is N95-3.
