Hello Disqus, Goodbye Comments

Disqus, the oh-so-awesome comment management system that I use on all of my other blogs, can now be found on SiMo! Woo hoo! SiMo readers will now see much more organized comments beneath each post. What you won’t see however, is the thousands of comments that had been present on SiMo posts. Sorry guys - unfortunately Disqus doesn’t currently support importing old comments. If there’s something in particular you were looking for, just shoot me an email and I’ll see what I can do to dig it up for you.

If you’re not already registered with Disqus, I highly recommend you do so. Rather than just seeing a string of sequential comments, Disqus provides a tree-like structure allowing you to reply to individual comments so that various conversations can take place in an organized manner. If you are a registered Disqus member, you will receive email notifications whenever someone replies to one of your comments. What’s more, you can simply reply to the email with your response and it will be posted here on SiMo in the appropriate place. Sweet!

As a new feature that was just added, Disqus now supports video commenting as well thanks to Seesmic. This means that you can add video responses that will be posted in line if you so choose. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the concept, but it’s there if you want it.

So give it a whirl and if you have your own blog, I highly recommend that you consider using Disqus to manage your comments.

A New Blog, an Overdue Link and Some Insight

Catching up, catching up… I’ve been oh so very busy lately as has Abul but we’re doing our very best to keep some good information flowing through SiMo. Of course SiMo is hardly the only thing that each of us works on these days. To say our schedules are full is an understatement.

On my end of things, I’ve been swamped. I won’t bore you with the details, but I will mention one thing: I’ve launched a new blog! What? Huh? He’s already down to three hours of sleep each night and he launched another blog? Ok, simmer down now - it’s just a tumblr blog. ;) My new blog will by personal sketch pad. It will reach well outside of SiMo and BGR into various areas and it will of course concentrate on technology, the internet and all that is mobile (I’m sure you’ll find Symbian / Nokia-related topics on there quite frequently). You’ll also find some fun stuff come through in my Qik feeds, etc. I’m unsure how often it will be updated but I’m hoping for at least a few times per week. Tumblr is a great platform for a personal blog like this as it is quite flexible for a free platform. So please, check it out and feel free to subscribe:

maramine

You’ll also find a new link to maramine in the sidebar just under the search box. The old link was to BGR but I think everyone knows I write there by now. Beneath the maramine link you’ll find another new link that should have gone up a loooooong time ago. Abul’s blog, Adonis Mobile, has been up for quite some time and covers a variety of content surrounding the mobile world. Adonis Mobile is quite popular in fact and if the feed is not currently in your reader of choice, I highly recommend that you add it.

Adonis Mobile

Beyond everything else, Abul and I are both gearing up for a refresh at Mobile9. Currently ranked 254 by Alexa, Mobile9 sees over 29 million unique users per month who view an astounding 250 million pages per month. Needless to say there is tremendous amount of potential for this already successful site and as we continue to mold and refine our offering and focus, we couldn’t be more excited about the future.

So there you have it. Getting back on topic, 2008 is going to be a fantastic year to be a Nokia fan. Plenty of exciting things will be coming out of Finland this year; some we know about already and some we don’t. Here at SiMo, we’re going to do our best to keep up and bring you all of the information we can as soon as it becomes available to us. Stay tuned!

Nokia @ CTIA: Recap

Apparently the folks at Nokia subscribe to the theory that if you’re going to do something, do it big. Nokia’s CTIA presence was just that: BIG. The Nokia booth was tremendous and very well laid out. The perimeter was lined with service demo stations for things like Mosh 2.0 and Share Online while the interior was home to a wide variety of Nokia handsets and accessories. As you’ll see in the gallery, a bunch of recently announced handsets such as the N78 (hot), black N82 (hotter, barring lack of US-3G) and the 6210 Navigator (hottest, probably the most well-built and smoothest Nokia handset we’ve seen in a while). I was a bit upset to learn that the N96 didn’t make it to the show, but fingers crossed that it has something to do with the alleged re-run that may be adding a xenon flash to the specs.

My frown was quickly turned upside down once I came across the 15+ WiMAX N810s on display in the corner. Aside from the subtle coloring changes that I like a lot, you might pass by this one thinking that it’s simply a standard N810. Oh no, a quick browse into the connectivity settings displays the oh-so-lovely WiMAX settings that are now available. Unfortunately there was no WiMAX connectivity available at the show, but it’s coming sooner rather than later. No word yet on pricing in terms of Sprint WiMAX plans but hopefully we’ll hear something soon in that department. Nokia also had the now available Hava Player client on display on one of the N810s. Hava Player, for those who don’t know, is a content streaming solution similar to the one offered by Sling Media and it features HD streaming along with a host of other features.

The Nokia fun didn’t end at the booth, by the way, or in the five other booths where Nokia had a presence. It continued out in the parking lot in front of the convention center. Nseries had a special tent set up where attendees could sign a waiver to take a ride in the “Internet Cafe in the Sky”. What’s that, you might ask? Essentially a platform housing a table and several seats. Once everyone on board was safely strapped in, a giant crane lifted the rig off the ground and participants enjoyed the opportunity to play with the new WiMAX N810 while suspended in the air. Odd? Maybe. Over the top? Definitely. Big? For sure. Hit the BGR gallery for pics.

Stavros The Crazy Genius

Stavros

Yesterday a package arrived for me which I didn’t expect. Upon opening and inspection revealed a poster and a t-shirt with a strange face on it. Intrigued I logged onto the url provided;

Stavros
http://www.theworldismycanvas.com/

Not many people have heard of him, some may even be scared of him on first view, but one thing for sure is Stavros is a Genius unique.

Today he starts his journey in Rome to create what is known as Live Art, using his trusty Nokia N82 he will use the integrated GPS feature to create “art”. The GPS will track his movements to create a trail which should then resembele something arty?

Is this a good idea? Is this even art? One thing’s for sure, I’m both confused and intrigued.

You can follow Stavros on his journey via his Bloggy (beware the intro is somewhat unorthodox, but watch it nonetheless.)

Users can also submit their ideas suggesting arty shapes Stavros can create on his journey. For now the journey has begun.

Commenting Problems Resolved!

This is just a quick note to let everyone know that commenting here on SiMo has been fixed. Woo hoo! Unfortunately you’ll have to retype some text that you see in a small window (I hate that) but it’s better than not being able to comment, right? ;) If the text in the window isn’t clear you can reload new text or even click the speaker icon to have the text read to you.

Thanks to all of my readers for your patience and thanks again to Jeroen for pointing out the problem. If you’ve posted a comment in the past month and not seen it published on the site, I do apologize. Hopefully we won’t have any more issues…
