Call for Beta Testers: SlingPlayer Mobile for UIQ

I’m not sure how many SiMo readers are packing UIQ devices but I guess we’ll find out! Sling Media, makers of the Slingbox and one of my all-time favorite S60 apps, is looking for UIQ owners to beta test the upcoming release of SlingPlayer Mobile for UIQ. That’s right, get your hands on some juicy Symbian software before the rest of the world!
What you need:
- A UIQ handset (Sony Ericsson W950i, W960i, P990i, P1i, Motorla Z8, etc)
- A Slingbox
- The ability to respect embargos - don’t show / discuss the software you test until permission is granted
What you get:
- Sweet software for free
- A preview of some hot software
- The ability to help a great developer by identifying bugs
- The ability to help shape future development by getting your suggestions to the right people, right away
If you fit the bill, head on over to Sling Media’s beta site and register as soon as you can. Mmmm… SlingPlayer mobile on a touchscreen…

CommentsQik Adds Video Download Support

Just a quick FYI for you guys. I’m constantly torn between Qik and Flixwagon. Qik offers better resolution while Flixwagon adds a cleaner UI, more options and more overall features. Qik’s latest addition will hardly sway me in one direction or the other but it’s a convenient little addition none the less.
If you take a peak beneath any video as you watch it on the Qik site, you’ll now see a download link. Sweet! Videos come in FLV format and this is a nice little feature if you want to reblog something without the Qik widget or even edit your own videos. It can also be useful in moving Qik videos to your mobile as I’ve never had much luck with the Qik mobile site.

CommentsMyStrands Social Player 3.1 Released; Scrobbling, new Player UI and more!

I’ve been waiting for a loooooong time for this update and I couldn’t be happier to let you all know that it’s finally here! My favorite music player / recommendation service Social Player has just received a major revision and trust me when I tell you, you can’t get it installed soon enough. Check out Gabriel’s post on the Strands Blog for more details, but here are my highlights:
- Native S60 app and Java app (S40-optimized) released!
- New Player UI - vastly improved interface, better controls
- Scrobbling support! Send track data to Last.fm as you listen
The post on the Strands Blog includes links to download both the native S60 app as well as the Java app. Now there’s really no reason why you can’t enjoy the complete interactive experience that Social Player provides on any device. Kudos to Strands!

CommentsLast.fm Client for S60 in the Works; Beta Available Now!

Olly just gave me some news that REALLY brightened up my Saturday. S60 3rd Edition users have been clamoring for a portal into the vast musical experience that is Last.fm, well, since the release of S60 3rd Edition. Windows Mobile devices have a Last.fm client, iPhone users have the amazing MobileScrobbler application and now S60 users get get their first taste of Last.fm functionality thanks to aspyplayer. Douglas Fernando da Silva, developer and author of the Random Thoughts About Nothing (Usually) So Simple blog, has released an early beta version of his open python app that allows users to scrobble tracks to Last.fm as they play on an S60 device. Woo hoo! As mentioned earlier, the app is still in very early stages. Currently, it only supports scrobbling so we can only hope that da Silva works towards integrating Last.fm radio functionality at a later point in time. Fingers crossed! da Silva is currently working on the UI so rest assured that the screen shots above don’t represent the finished product. To make use of aspyplayer, you’ll need to first install Python for S60. Then just sign and install the aspyplayer installer package and you’re good to go.

CommentsLive Streaming with QIK
Want to stream live video from any place quickly and efficiently? Then you have got to get QIK. It is a fabulous application which does exactly that. It has been available and in Alpha for a little while now and has been recently updated to include some great features. The update gives users of the N95, N82 and N93i the ability to stream in high quality resolution of 640 x 480 which is an improvement from the previous 320×240, which is still the standard for most other models supported.

The other great features include the ability to stream to your Twitter or Seesmic accounts too!
Qik is ideal if you are thinking of starting your own video blog, or have one I’d recommend giving Qik a go. It’s currently in Alpha stage but for more information and to sign up visit their homepage. This looks pretty promising and I’m hoping it will be a great addition
You can visit my profile for comparison clips between the previous and latest versions. As you may notice there is a few seconds delay between the actual stream being shot and displayed. Still I think this is pretty awesome.
