Nokia vs Apple in The Internet Mobile Device Market
We've been as excited as everyone else about the iPhone 3G. But it's easy to forget that the iphone is just a tiny player in the mobile phone market. Even if it hits Steve Jobs' target of 10 million iphone sales by end of 2008, that will still be less than 1% of the mobile device market. To put it into perspective, Nokia remains the world's biggest mobile handset maker with an estimated 40% of the market. Impressively Nokia has a very healthy lead over its competition. However if you look more closely, Nokia is slipping behind in the all-important Internet mobile device market. [Read]
Nokia Responds to Batphone Allegations
Remember the fancy cellphone in The Dark Knight? It was that touchscreen Nokia that Morgan Freeman was carrying around all like, "Look at me, I'm so cool, I'm Batman's boss as well as the narrator behind many popular films." Some people (OK, CrunchGear) think that it might be the Nokia Tube (we were too busy making "pew pew" noises in the seats to notice). Nokia, however, is denying it. [Read]
Hot heads make Nokia ears burn
Users of Nokia's 6120 Classic handset report that when used for more than five minutes the handset gets so hot that calls must be terminated or the user must switch the handset from ear to ear to dissipate the heat. Environmental consultant Tim Phillips purchased his Nokia 6120 Classic from Telstra as part of a 24-month plan, but mere minutes into his first conversation, he noticed the earpiece would quickly rise in temperature. Nokia on Tuesday announced it plans to acquire all of Symbian, which develops an operating system for mobile phones. The Finnish phone giant currently owns about 48 per cent and will pay EUR264 million (US$410 million) for the rest. It has received thumbs up from Sony Ericsson, Ericsson, Panasonic Mobile Communications and Siemens, which represents about 91 percent of the Symbian shares subject to the offer, according to a statement from Nokia. Samsung Electronics, a partial stakeholder in Symbian, hasn't commented yet, but Nokia said it expects the company to agree to the sale. [Read]
Engadget Mobile's Nokia E71 review
They've got a bona fide, US 3G-friendly, Nokia E71 over at Engadget Mobile, all gussied up and reviewed for your viewing pleasure. The phone is a serious statement from Nokia, being that company's first 3G QWERTY device in the States, and the thinnest QWERTY smartphone in existence. Not too shabby for a little Finnish upstart. Nokia: 3G iPhone Will Help Us, Too; Counters With N96
Apple may have stolen yesterday's headlines with the news it finally supports 3G, but Nokia SVP Anssi Vanjoki (via Reuters) is sanguine: "Convergence will strengthen through such a significant company such as Apple coming to that field. From the perspective of operator business this is an extremely good issue." But analysts disagreed. American Technology Research downgraded the Finnish handset maker from "buy" to "hold," warning: "Nokia will face increasing competition from new third-generation smart-phone introductions in the second half of 2008 and early 2009. We do not recommend new money until we get a competitive response from Nokia." [Read]

It's presto, change-o as new iPhone is unveiled
Wouldn't it be cool if you could use your cellphone to monitor activities in your home, say, to zoom in for an audio/video check of the baby's room while you were at work, or even adjust the heat? Or how about going to a theme park and checking your phone to discover if other friends are there, and arrange a meeting place? Such concepts are not pie in the sky, but actual programs that have been developed for Apple's iPhone, the combination iPod/phone and Internet device first introduced to acclaim a year ago. [Read]
Transfers of N-Gage games can be done though Nokia Care
Yesterday, we reported that Nokia would be locking N-Gage game purchases to a single handset, much to the dismay of mobile gamers around the planet. It just sounded like one massive rip-off, because when I buy a cell phone game, I should have the right to port that game over to a replacement phone. I guess the folks at Nokia caught wind of our dismay. [Read]
Five Apps I Couldn't Live Without; Part 3
In terms of using my handset for entertainment purposes, my needs begin and end with SlingPlayer Mobile (aside from music of course). I'm not much of a gamer - in fact I think the only game I have on my handset right now is mBounce's "The Big 2", a Chinese card game. I can't even read a word of it but I always did enjoy that game as a child so I play it from time to time. So when it comes time for me to get my entertainment on, I look to SlingPlayer Mobile. Five Apps I Couldn't Live Without; Part 2
Profiles couldn't be more important to me. As much as I did enjoy my iPhone, it is and was absolutely insane to me that Apple would even consider issuing a handset without profile functionality. S60 on the other hand, provides profiles with relatively flexible settings but no profile management. That is where Best Profiles comes in. You can read my initial review to get a good idea of what the app does, but plenty of functionality has been added since version 1. [Read]
Five S60 Apps I Couldn't Live Without; Part 1
A recurring question that I always seem to face is "what is your favourite S60 app"? People ask me in person, over email, over IM and even on various social networks. I always have an extremely difficult time answering this question because truth be told, there are tons of apps that could be considered "my favourite" at one time or another. It all depends on the circumstance. If I'm lost on my way to a new destination, Garmin Mobile or Nokia Maps is my favourite app because it gets me where I need to be. If I'm getting close to my monthly SMS limit, UniMessaging Pro is my favourite app because it lets me quickly reply to SMS messages via email without losing the train of thought. If I need to rock out then MyStrands Social Player does the job better than any other mobile player I know. And so onā [Read]
